Makeup First Impressions Gone Wrong

Have you ever bought something EVERYONE was raving about and been disappointed when you used it? Here are three products I bought, tried, and didn’t like at first but have since changed my mind about.

  1. Dr. Brandt No More Baggage Eye De-puffing Gel I saw a few other bloggers RAVING about this and Ashlee from Little Lovelies Blog finally sold me on her Instagram stories. I got it for 50% off, which is huge, because it is not cheap. From all of the reviews I saw, I was sure it would end all of my dark circle problems so I was willing to spend a little more than I normally would.  As soon as I got it, I applied it after my moisturizer and before my foundation/concealer. I definitely noticed a difference in the darkness and puffiness almost instantly. Now, here’s where the struggle started. I used my Loreal Infallible Total Cover Foundation and it caked up so quickly and rolled off of my face. So, I gave up and decided to try again the next day. This time, I applied and waited even longer for it to dry. Then I used a liquid foundation and it looked amazing! I’ve used this almost every day since I bought it and haven’t had any issues like the first day so I think application and dry time are key!
  2. Becca Velvet Blurring Primer – Perfecting Base Let me start by saying that I LOVE Becca products, so I think my standards are a little high when I’m judging anything by Becca. Becca’s First Light Priming Filter is one of my all-time favorite primers, so I was really excited to try the Velvet Blurring Primer. My dreams were quickly crushed when I tried pairing it with a super matte foundation and it rolled and flaked as I was applying. I gave it another go with Loreal Infallible Pro Glow foundation and it was a much better experience. Then, I paired it with Becca Ultimate Coverage Foundation and it was an absolute dream. Patience was definitely a virtue when testing this primer, and I’ll still always grab my First Light, but this primer really is great for that blurred matte look.
  3. Loreal Infallible Total Cover Foundation First of all, the coverage is incredible, but, the formula is different than any other foundation I’ve ever used and the first few times I used it were a little tricky.  When I first tried this product, I was using a primer that didn’t work well with it. Switching to a more hydrating primer and making sure my primer is completely dry has completely changed my opinion of this product. Application is super easy when you have the right primer and the coverage is so good that it can be used as or to replace your concealer!  A little goes a long way and it’s incredibly mattefying. If you’re having a hard time with the formula, you can also mix it with the Infallible foundation to make application a little easier. It’s super affordable and the coverage is great making this is one of my favorite drugstore products!
Sometimes, a product just sucks or might not work for you. But other times, it’s really about application or the other products you’re using with it. Next time you buy something you don’t love at first, try it a few times with other products before you throw in the towel — I’m glad I did!
