Thanksgiving Table

As a kid, I remember Thanksgiving being a day full of driving from house to house, celebrating with different sides of the family. We would do Thanksgiving dinner at one house, Thanksgiving round 2 at the next house and dessert at the last house. As an adult, we like to keep it really low key around here. My in-laws host every year, we don’t get dressed up, and there’s usually a nap or two involved. Since we bought our house (4 years ago, yesterday!), Pete and I have started a few traditions of our own. We wake up, make festive drinks and watch the Thanksgiving Day parade on TV while I bake my famous pumpkin pie.

Since we don’t host, it’s hard to justify even decorating a Thanksgiving table, but I felt like it was a good transition between Halloween and CHRISTMAS. Did I mention I’m a little excited for Christmas? I found the table runner and metallic turkey centerpiece at HomeGoods in early September and couldn’t let them go. They went straight to the attic while our leaves and pumpkins stole the scene for Halloween, but I’m so excited that they’ve made their way to this Thanksgiving table.

The plates and flatware are our everyday staples. When we got married, we had registered for fancy china and my grandma had purchased a few place settings for us. We realized that it made a lot more sense to have something we would get more use out of and exchanged the place settings she bought for the entire Caterer’s Box Dinnerware Set from Pottery Barn. They’re simple white porcelain, dishwasher/microwave/oven safe, and casual enough for everyday use. I love that they are classic enough to dress up for the holidays – just a few extra elements made for the perfect Thanksgiving table. Plus, it’s nice to reach for something every single day that reminds me of her. In case you missed it, I did an entire post about how awesome she was – you can read that here.

This year, we’re celebrating Thanksgiving on Saturday because my mother-in-law is having knee surgery today. Although it isn’t our usual tradition, it works out well since Pete has been sick the last few days. I’ll still be waking up to watch the parade tomorrow, we’ll delay the festive cocktails (This year’s recipe: Caramel Apple Cider mimosas!) and we’ll have a pretty Thanksgiving table to come home and eat leftovers on.
