Words of Wisdom: Quarantine Hair with Melissa Mezzanotte from Salon Mezzmerize

We’re quarantined. Between all of the work from home and social distancing, I’m sure we could all use a little advice when it comes to quarantine hair. I asked my friend and stylist, Melissa Mezzanotte, all of the burning questions about dealing with quarantine hair. Melissa has been in the beauty industry for over 10 years since graduating from Paul Mitchell and perfecting her craft until she opened Salon Mezzmerize in 2015. She’s an absolute master of blonde and balayage, and the only person I will trust my hair to these days.

I stretched my last appointment closer to 12 weeks from my usual 10, and it fell right at the beginning of this craziness. It’s been about 14 weeks since I’ve had the luxury of some fresh highlights, someone else washing my hair and a little trim. So how do we all deal with this? Let’s get to it!

Q: Is there a box dye that will hold me over between now and my next appointment?

A: I would say a nice hat should do the trick.

Q: What is the best way to handle dead ends?

A: Don’t look at them and they won’t bother you.

Q: Should I try to trim my own hair?

A: No.

Q: What kind of self-care hair routines would you recommend while I’m stuck at home?

A: Conditioning treatments. Apply a heavy conditioner to damp hair, wrap in shower cap and towel and leave in overnight.

Q: How long can I really go without washing my hair?

A: Give it a good scrub once a week.

Q: How has this impacted your business? How can your clients support you?

A: My salon is closed so my coworkers and I are currently unable to make an income. My clients can support me by not making a bigger mess out of their hair than it will be when I get to see them.

Q: Any words of wisdom?

A: This is not the time to cut bangs under any circumstances. If you’re bored with your hair, try styling it differently. A little gray and a couple split ends never hurt anyone. YouTube has tons of tutorials to follow. This will all be over before we know it.

Q: Any last thoughts?

A: Ya’ll aren’t going anywhere, put the scissors and the box dye down.

While it feels really inconvenient to be “stuck at home”, there are lots of people with much bigger problems. Melissa had to reschedule her wedding because of COVID-19. People have lost jobs and loved ones. If a few gray hairs and some split ends are at the top of our list of things to be worried about, we’re the lucky ones.
