High George New Haven

We were hosted compliments of High George. All opinions are my own.

If you’re looking for the perfect place to spend date night or enjoy the gorgeous Connecticut weather this time of year, you have to check out High George in New Haven. New Haven is known for its pizza and college bar scene, so High George is definitely a breath of fresh air… literally… it’s a rooftop bar!

High George is the newest food and cocktail destination in New Haven, located on the rooftop of The Blake Hotel at the corner of High and George Streets. Chef Tyler Anderson’s menu features his fresh take on New England Summer classic dishes and Raw Bar favorites. To complement the small plate menu, they have a ton of fancy cocktails and a varied wine and beer selection. We started off with drinks and I got the Paid Vacation, a unique combination of Roku Gin, Velvet Falernum, roasted almond orgeat, lemon, and nutmeg.

First up, the Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail with Old Bay Seasoning and Gochujang cocktail sauce. The shrimp were HUGE and the light seasoning really kicked up the flavor and the cocktail sauce was delicious!

The skewers were next. We ordered the mushroom, beef and pork belly. The mushroom skewers were topped with a salsa verde and were one of my favorite items on the menu! The coal oven flavor really came through in the beef and the combination of pork belly and peach was perfect.

Next up were the steamed buns. We love a good lobster roll, so we went with the Lobster and Cheeseburger. The Lobster was topped with bourbon butter which was a really cool twist on a Connecticut classic. The Cheeseburger was topped with sharp cheddar, onion and special sauce, the perfect combination. The steamed buns were SO good — doughy, delicious and really filling!

We visited on the last day of New Haven Cocktail Week, which I didn’t even know was a thing. They had a special cocktail menu, so I tried the Accidente De Fresa made with Puerto de Indias Strawberry Gin, Strawberry Shrub, Citrus, and Lambrusco. The drink was so refreshing and I can’t wait to get my passport for New Haven Cocktail Week next summer.

We couldn’t resist dessert, so we got a Whoopie Pie and Raspberry Sorbet. They are super instagrammable and were the perfect way to cap off our High George experience. Everything was amazing, it was hard to pick favorites. I truly can’t stop thinking about the Cheeseburger steamed buns, mushroom skewers and Paid Vacation cocktail.

The three+ season rooftop space features a fully retractable roof, providing dry conditions with a birds-eye view during storms. They just launched a new “Storm Chaser” special, offering its Category Five Cocktail – with Appleton Rum, Tempus Fugit Banane, orange, lime, spiced cherry, Liberation Bitters – for just $5 all night during rainy weather. They also have a happy hour menu with affordable cocktail, wine, and beer options and $1 oysters.

High George is open Wednesday-Saturday from 4pm-close and is available for private parties and functions. For more information, including menus, visit www.highgeorge.com or on Instagram.
